the zen of rain soccer

Friday, April 29th, 2011

One thing I’ve been meaning to write about since our visit to Abbe’s family was the game of soccer we played in the rain on Easter Sunday. Abbe, Bubs, and a few of her relatives started by just taking shots on Abbe in “goal” (which consisted of a couple of leland pines) and it quickly grew into a somewhat competitive game. I joined in along with any one else that was brave enough. And then the sky opened up on us and we kept playing. Bubs was laughing his head off constantly. I took a moment in between the action to think about how great Abbe’s family has been to my children. We were soaked, sweaty, muddy, and sore afterwards – but that ruled.

Movie Review…

Tron: Legacy – this movie actually surprised me, not really that shitty. Visually, it’s cool. Acting, well c’mon… did you see the first one?

on the positive therapeutic effects of snorting-we-were-laughing-so-hard playroom hockey

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

Bubs had his last indoor soccer game and they got pummeled by another travel team, 7-2. Bubs did net a nice goal from a really sweet pass off of the end boards from his buddy Timmy. Afterwards, Bubs opted to come home with me rather than hang at a party with his little sister’s friends. Bubs and I stopped at the cheese shoppe to say hi to Abbe and get a cream soda for a thirsty soccer player. I didn’t open the laptop once and we had a good solid two hours of snorting-we-were-laughing-so-hard, playroom hockey that we both needed.

I got a ton of work done yesterday, stacked firewood, and even got a nice 5 and a half mile run around Camp Ocky too. I got this shot on the way out of the camp…

This is a pet peeve of mine… those stick figure/flip flop stickers parents put on their cars. I would however, rank this above putting your religious beliefs on a bumper sticker. Honestly, has anyone been driving down the road and had a life-changing epiphany of faith after reading ad-space that is also shared with Calvin peeing on a Chevy logo? I digress… Ok, so what is going on here? Did they think they had to put the whole neighborhood on the back of the family truckster in stick figures? And what’s with Mr. Anti-Social Dog? Join the million stickman march party…

Oh and I finally solved the weird occasional shuffle thing that was going on with my iPhone while I was listening to music while I was running. What was happening is I would be running and listening to tunes and suddenly a weird beep sound would come on and the song would change. The timing seemed to be every 30 seconds so I assumed that I had put my phone into some sort of weird song sample shuffle or something. Turns out, I’m a moron (shocking I know right?). I was shaking the phone and the “shake to shuffle” thing was turned on. After some googling I finally solved it, whew.

Movie Reviews…

Up in the Air – this was a little better than I expected. From the outside, this film looked like another Lost in Translation but with a handsome lead instead of a funny lead. But, this turned out to be a pretty significant Pema Chödrön-ish statement about embracing nothingness and the freedom of preventing your possessions from defining you.

An angel is needed, or at least a new box of wine.

This weekend saw the end of soccer season, big thanks to Coach Ron, he did an excellent job of teaching the game and making it fun for the boys… (that’s Bubs in the green goalie shirt below)

We went to Wasabi with my mother last night, the kids loved the Ramune, the sushi was awesome (as always) and this also gave Abbe a reason to wear the new coat she made for herself…

Did I mention the sushi was awesome?…

I’m not feeling well this morning. Abbe and I both had a horrible run yesterday. The weekend was hectic to say the least – two soccer games, tons of coding, carting everyone around everywhere, insane amounts of coding, no sleep. I’m beyond exhausted at this point, I need a REAL weekend. One where the only thing scheduled is getting some chores done around the house. Abbe and I both were falling asleep last night and both near tears from all of the stress over money, getting work done, having time for each other, the impending holidays that we can’t afford, raising this money for LLS, and last but certainly not least, Abbe’s niece that is coming any day now. An angel is needed, or at least a new box of wine.

Here’s me butchering the first couple of verses and choruses to Little Lion Man, by Mumford & Sons.

my hero playing up

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Bubs’ soccer game was canceled today, but he did help out one of the 5/6th grade Medford Lakes teams (Bubs is a 4th grader) and played “up”. He started in goal and only gave up one that was honestly, a perfect high shot that most adults could not have stopped. In the second half, he moved up to play forward and had a nice assist on a goal. The Lakers lost 4-2 to the Medford team but played well with no subs (and two fourth graders in the line-up). Bubs’ teammate (on his Oranje 3/4th graders team) Timmy played awesome too, in fact – I’m pretty sure Tim had more touches than any other player on the field. Here’s my boy in net… look at how big that goalie jersey is on him – looks like a nightgown.

Proud of you Bubs, you were nervous, but you responded and showed everyone once again why you’re my hero.

Movie reviews…

Get Him to the Greek – this film was decent. It’s as good as Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Obviously not Shakespeare, but Puffy is friggin’ hilarious and Jonah Hill making a The Mars Volta reference made me smile too.

Back from da ‘Swamp!

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Van and Viv’s first visit with Abbe’s family was a success to say the least. Abbe’s family has made me feel welcome since day one, so my only concern was my kids behavior, but they were having so much fun they didn’t have time to be bad! Between the trailer rides with Abbe’s Dad, all the other kids to play with, the creek in the back yard, tons of soccer (Bubs was soooo happy when he got Abbe’s brother Luke to play with him), lots of baseball catches (wow, my arm is sore!), and the trip to Savidge Farms – the kids were snoring on the way home full of Pennsylvania Dutch goodness.

Really had a ducky time talking to Liz Sacks and her family. (the use of the word ducky is on purpose there, Liz and I had a ‘callback’ joke running the entire day – we thought it was hilarious, because it absolutely totally was).

We were also really happy to see that Alayna was feeling well enough after a big treatment on Friday to come to the party. Viv gathered up a bunch of wildflowers in the field between Bruce and Jane’s home on the way back from the pumpkin picking. With me holding her hand, Viv got up the courage to give the flowers to Alayna and wish her to get better soon.

I have absolutely no idea what I ever did to deserve such a wonderful girlfriend, these amazing kids, and all this kindness around me. I’ll probably never understand the justification for all this goodness, I’ll just try to recognize it as best I can and be grateful. Love, love, love this family.
