birthday

Friday, March 18th, 2011

My birthday was good… got a surprise cookie cake at BNI, had three great piano lessons (one student even played Happy Birthday for me), kids were constantly giving me hugs, dinner at Mom’s, we picked up Abbe from work who bought me a nice big hunk of Locatelli romano, and then Leah and Mya stopped by with a cool beer schooner (and Mya joined the kids and I for our bedtime stories… and then she joined Viv for more bedtime stories). There wasn’t an insane party or tons of people shouting surprise, but everyone went out of their way to make me feel very loved. And that’s more than I could ask.

Here it is folks, the last day of my 30s…

Yesterday Abbe’s birthday present finally arrived (a poster sized version of the infamous marathon finish line proposal), Viv dressed like a gypsy/princess to color, had a great piano lesson with Lori, Bill came over and played lots of hockey with the kids and got lots of hugs, Doug stopped by with a birthday bottle of Chimay, and I also got a nice comment from Debbie Diesen, the author of the Pout-Pout Fish series of books!

quick post, yes very busy

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Today is going to be a busy one – three piano lessons, networking luncheon (and membership committee meeting beforehand), tons of coding in between, and then the usual carting of the childrens to and from school. Really looking forward to watching a movie tonight with Abbe.

Movie review…

Revanche (The Criterion Collection) – very good Austrian modern day (this was made in 2008) film noir, the acting is excellent. The subject matter goes from just filthy horribleness to more beautiful parts of being a human being and during both projections it is always unsettling. Adding to that uneasy feeling is the complete lack of a film score. This was good, but I have to give the Transformer-fan warning – if you thought Iron Man 2 was the most kick assiest movie ever… just wait for Iron Man 3.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

I am thankful for the following: Van and Viv, Abbe, my Mom, my family, my friends, a healthy baby Mia for Rachel and Mike, my son’s awesome report card, weekly ice hockey practice with my son, my guitar and piano students and all the lessons they teach me, my customers, Sergei Bobrovsky, running, my home, my kids’ health, Roy Halladay, drawings from Viv, Yogi, NJ Family Care, all of the people that have donated to mine and Abbe’s marathon team for LLS, the Phillies, the Flyers, my iPhone, reading stories with my kids every night, and right now, coffee!

Movie review…

The Edukators – this German film details the exploits of a group of revolutionaries that break into wealthy homes and instead of stealing, rearrange and stack their belongings with left-behind anti-materialist messages. A romance develops and then an interesting twist comes with a botched break-in. Very good movie, perhaps could have been better if it ventured into the can of political worms that the story opened, but not bad.

Books We’ve Been Reading…

We Are in a Book! (An Elephant and Piggie Book) – this was a very good Elephant and Piggie book, kids laughed a lot.
It’s Christmas, David! – the kids love the David books, good illustrations and a sweet Christmas ending too.
Art & Max – the artwork in this book is good, but the dialogue was not effective – I wonder if this was originally written in another language or something. The kids did enjoy the book.
It’s a Book – this book was very funny and a great commentary on today’s society with the technology references, BUT and this is a big but… the story uses the word “jackass”. Now, it’s done in a non-vulgar way, but the tongue-and-cheek joke to just the mommys and daddys is not lost on the kids. Read it to yourself first parents, and then decide on reading it to your kids. I did read this book to my kids and used this as a lesson for what that word means and how we do not use that word in school or use it to call names. Also, the message about how great books are even in today’s world of blogs, laptops, and iPhones was not lost on my kiddos.
Brontorina – Viv, of coursed loved this story – Van was so-so on it. It’s funny and I love any story involving an outsider being included.
