troubleshooting sleep while sleeping

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

OK, first off… HOLY SHIT WHAT A HOCKEY GAME LAST NIGHT!!! WOOO HOOO FLYERS!!!! TWO HAT TRICKS!!!

So, I did accomplish what I promised myself – troubleshooting these sleep issues. I am going to be seen by the pulmonary unit at Deborah Heart & Lung in a couple weeks, probably for a sleep study. The folks I spoke to on the phone were so nice – they remembered my mother (Mom is a retired RN) who worked there and my father (Dad had a quadruple bypass there) as a patient. I saw my doctor that afternoon, and he let me know that the nasal spray I had been using off and on has a side effect… insomnia! He wrote me a script for the sinus issues and wants to hear back after I meet with the folks at Deborah.

The other troubleshooting idea I came up with was purchasing Night Recorder, an iPhone app that allows you to set a recording level (so you set it just above whatever ambient noise there is in your bedroom) and it records anything above that. The first night using it revealed the following…

  • 11:35pm Abbe coughing
  • 11:49pm Abbe coughing
  • 12:28am Titan getting up and laying down
  • 12:30am Abbe coughing
  • 12:31am Titan getting up and laying down
  • 12:34am Abbe coughing
  • 2:13am Titan getting up and laying down
  • 3:11am Titan getting up and laying down
  • 6:20am Titan getting up and laying down
  • 6:26am Me burping
  • 7am Me waking up and turning off the app
So not much, but it was relieving to not hearing a recording of me snoring and gasping for air or anything! I’m going to continue to record sleep until the meeting with the team at Deborah, it’s kinda like Paranormal Activity… maybe I learn something, or maybe I find out all the stuff that goes down while I’m catching some Z’s. I think Titan might need a comfy dog bed and Abbe needs some cough medicine!

irritable zombie

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

I’m feeling a little better today. Sleep was better, but I still woke up a bunch. I hope tonight gets a little better, I’ve been such an irritable zombie lately.

My juicer arrived today and the kids and I just enjoyed a pretty awesome glass of carrots, apples, oranges, and grapes.

Opening Day

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

Yesterday was Viv’s rainy opening day for Medford Lakes softball, which consists of a parade down to the ballfields, running the bases, and lots of hot dogs and snacks. Viv and her buddy Nora pretty much danced the entire length of the parade route…

there were no robots in the late 1500s and talking with my son

Friday, March 30th, 2012

My son doesn’t like it when we have talks about his mistakes. Well… he says it’s annoying, but he always feels better once the air has been cleared. It’s tough dealing with a 10 year some days. He is so smart and a lot of times, it’s difficult for him to grasp that although he may be right with his arguments, but at the same time there may be a lesson that he needs to hear any way. Bubs is so much like I was at his age, it pains him when things don’t go his way, it seems at times like he is a complete control freak – but it’s really just his big heart getting in the way of reason (and also being a little bit of control freak too). Right now, we’re talking a lot about decisions and responsibility – tough subjects that honestly most adults truly do not have a firm understanding. Keep listening son, you’re doing so well. I am incredibly proud of you son… and hey, I’m going to keep listening too.

Movie Reviews…

Anonymous – wow, this was good. Quite possibly the most authentic period piece about the Elizabethan era. The concept is very cool too – did Shakespeare (who was truly illiterate) actually pen the works attributed to him? The acting is excellent, the story is really well done – all that said, this film will seem slow to the majority of mass released film lovers – so don’t get mad at me for this recommendation when you were hoping for robots exploding n’ shit. Hint: there were no robots in the late 1500s.
