sleep gratitude

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

With a major project deadline looming by close of business tomorrow and an another by next Tuesday – I’m a busy coder lately. But throw a half day for my kids on top of that, and now, I’ve got to be running at even higher RPMs. Thankfully, my sleep has been good since the nasal spray diagnosis by my doctor. Boy, it feels good to be well rested. I’ve never had much trouble with sleeping and now, I have a new found respect for folks with sleep issues. Tough, tough stuff.

Movie Reviews…

Martha Marcy May Marlene - very good film. Slow moving and dense at points, but heavy subject material, so warranted. A woman leaves a cult and attempts to get back to some sort of life. Her sister takes her in to live with her and they struggle through undoing the mental and physical torture she endured as a member of the cult. Not a lot of action, but some incredible scenes, and a great open-to-interpretation ending.

Movie Reviews…

Margin Call - ugh, the beginning of this movie is tough to watch as someone that was part of a layoff at one point during my professional career. The film is really well-acted, a subtle financial drama depicting the beginning of the housing bubble collapse from behind the doors of one of the largest investment firms on Wall Street. Brutality in a business suit is conveyed without tearful scenes of middle to lower income families losing their homes and livelihoods.

Fat Sick & Nearly Dead - this documentary on the juicing movement was definitely inspiring and it may have given me the path to getting my uber pickey 10 year old to get his daily vegetables. With the amount of cancer and heart disease in my family and Abbe’s, reducing the amount of  meat intake and increasing the veggies is never a bad idea. Abbe and I are  going to do a juice fast when the time is right (aka – when the kids are not home for the first three days when people get really cranky). That said, we absolutely will be consulting our physicians before hand. Great film too, funny and very likable, inspiring characters.

The Fajitas of Life

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

I came up with this concept a few years ago – “The Fajitas of Life”. It struck me while I was at a Mexican restaurant. I had ordered something that sorta sounded good from the description on the menu, but when it arrived it was an over-spiced pile of yuck. And while I was doing my best to finish this dish, a sizzling tray full of fajitas aromatically was carried past my table and I realized I should have just gotten the fajitas.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t an advisory type of concept. Please try new things. Holy crap, my son would exist solely on chicken fingers if his family didn’t encourage him to try things non-chicken finger-related (NCFR). The Fajitas of Life for me are only about appreciating the things in life that you know and give me comfort. Go out in your sailboat across the ocean looking for those brave new worlds, but don’t forget your home. Fajitas of life are those things that you consider and think, “yeah, that’s pretty good… but I bet I can find something waaaaay better.”

Yes, I think this is a bit of worry from a Dad of a son that is approaching some very formative years. And a daughter that is not far behind him.

It’s important to reach and create, but don’t forget about the fajitas of life. Mrs. Garrett would be proud of you…

A few of the Fajitas of Life…

  1. Al Green
  2. Laying in a hammock
  3. Walking the dog
  4. Camping
  5. Having a baseball catch
  6. Going on a sunset run

Movie Reviews…

Cowboys & Aliens- OK, so to enjoy this film… at the exact moment you hit Play, you’ve got to stop thinking. If you are able to do so, there is hope that you may enjoy this… ahem, film.

Contagion - this move was decent. It certainly had enough big name members in the cast. It’s frightening. It does have a good amount of realism and the acting is decent, but the movie just kind of fizzles out as the cure (sorry, I should have said spoiler alert there) is found and people start putting their lives together.

Opening Day

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

Yesterday was Viv’s rainy opening day for Medford Lakes softball, which consists of a parade down to the ballfields, running the bases, and lots of hot dogs and snacks. Viv and her buddy Nora pretty much danced the entire length of the parade route…

overcome the cumulonimbus

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

I hope everybody has people in their lives like BLP. BLP is a nickname for my friend Bill. BLP aren’t his initials, they actually stand for Brilliant Little Pumpkin, which came from his Aunt Dolly when she unknowingly sent an congratulatory group email to one of the projects Bill and I work on together. I believe the text was something along the lines of, “… so proud of my brilliant little pumpkin!”

And yes, the acronym has stuck.

BLP is one of those friends in my life that just has the uncanny ability to talk me off the ledge, no matter what is going on in my life. He always knows what I need to hear to help me overcome that big crisis currently causing the cumulonimbus clouds to gather in my noggin. BLP has been an incredibly big influence on this comeback.

BLP and I had lunch yesterday and worked on solving all the conundrums we’re running into. Two geeky guys working for ourselves (and each other most times too), trying to figure all this out, and do good for our families.
