double red wins this time
I feel terrible, but it was for a great cause. I’ve had to stop twice writing this blog post because I thought I was going to pass out. I went to donate blood this morning and during the history portion of the donation I learned that I am a good candidate (since I’m A negative and have a good iron level) to do a double red cell donation.
It was going fine until I started noticing my hands going numb and then I could feel tunnel vision coming on. I turned to the very nice Red Cross attendant, Arlene and let her know I wasn’t feeling well. I saw Arlene’s face go as white as my own when she saw me. They covered me in wet cold towels and put a bag on my mouth. I was OK pretty quickly, but they had to remove the needle and I only was able to donate about 2mL of red blood cells. They explained that I had a reaction to the citrates that they were administering along with the saline and my own blood (minus those red blood cells of course).
I am pretty bummed I couldn’t finish the donation and this will not scare me from donating again (even trying the double red again if I can figure out why it didn’t go so well). It was great seeing a bunch of other Medford Lakers there, from what I heard the turnout was awesome.

even if all you do is a regular donation on a regular basis that will be great because any of the negative blood types are always desperately needed.
