Silversun Pickups quickly has become one of my favorite bands ever since my good buddy Doug introduced me to them driving home from a Hold Steady concert a couple of years or so ago. SSPU sounded fantastic, but one thing became abundantly clear after seeing them live – Brian Aubert is the entire band. Although drummer Chris Guanlao definitely stands out as a talented player, I get the Billy Corrigan-Jimmy Chambers kind of feel that this drummer is given some narrow confines in which to operate. That said, they played tight and I would really like to see them play a longer set (45 minutes – that’s it?!), because a lot of their songs lend themselves to some improvisational exploration in a live setting.
So admittedly, I wasn’t the biggest Muse fan going to the show and honestly, I didn’t leave with some new found love for their songs. To me, Muse tends to be hit and miss from song to song. And there is absolutely zero shame, David Bowie (one of my favorites – I do have a cat named Bowie and one named Ziggy in my house) is the epitome of hit and miss. Here’s what I do know about Muse now…
They fucking love the shit out of some lasers
They are insanely talented instrumentalists
That poor keyboard player (not a real member of the band) has to be bummed he doesn’t get a cool riser thingamajobby
They spend a TON of money on their live shows
Jan and I remarked after seeing the show that the next host city for the Olympics needs to hire Muse’s crew. They put on a comparable performance with zero issues (and this was only the third night of the tour too). I will definitely go see both of these bands again.
Here are some shots from the night… (these were previously posted)…
