White Sands and Arriving in Cloudcroft
White Sands National Monument should really be considered one of the 8 wonders of the world. I just witnessed the fastest change in temperature and vegetation I’ve ever seen, going from Alamogordo upto Cloudcroft, the temperature went from 69 to 53 degrees (F) in the span of 16 miles. The dusty dessert brush suddenly became huge Ponderosa Pines and Aspens – amazing. Today we are heading to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in hopes to spot some Sandhill Cranes.
First attempt to slide down the dunes…
And the second…

Looks like a cool place – I’ve been to Great Sand Dunes National Monument, which is pretty cool too but I don’t think it’s as expansive as this park. And I’m jealous you’re going to Basque del Apache!! Hope you see some cranes, though.
We ran into a similar temperature change in Arizona this spring: it was in the 70′s at our homebase when we started (at 8 a.m.), but in the high 50′s at the top of the mountains at about noon. By the time we got back to our camp at about 4, it was in the low 90′s. Quite a change for a small area.
