trench warfare

After teaching two guitar lessons, I fixed a bunch of stuff for the Battleship NJ website, upgraded the Overbrook School blog to WP 2.3.3, and started working on the NitroVideo changes to a PERL script. I’ve got some work to do tonight on the Wheelies OSC store which IPOWER broke during their server upgrade (fuckers!).

I got the kids on the phone before their bedtime. Bubs is sick but he was enjoying the Batman animated movies I sent him. Viv wanted some more jams on the organ (boy, I can’t wait for her to actually play it) and then I read her a Barbie book from the big pile of books that was sent from Claudia.

Here’s a short dichotomy of how 30 years of friendship equates into me torturing my good buddy Doug over the ghosts of cassingle/CD purchases past…

Email from Jan (Doug’s sister)…

TO:  me, Robyn, Doug

hey all,

I got four tickets in the central loge area – if you want one, let me know.  If you don’t, that’s ok, I will post on craigslist or find other cooler people to go with.

Purchase your tickets first for The Swell Season – the musical duo of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, at the Tower Theater on May 20th.

My reply…

I’m all over it like Doug on Paula Abdul cassingles back in the day.

Doug’s reply…

Actually, I’m not proud to say it, but Paula Abdul was my first CD purchase.  That’s right, of all the music in the world, I selected Paula Abdul to start my new CD collection.  I recall Van making fun of me then, as well.  That criticism has stood the test of time.

I started A Very Long Engagement last night before bed and wow, Audrey Tautou is breathtaking. And about an hour into the movie, out of nowhere comes Jody Foster? The scenes at The Battle of the Somme are amazing and brutal. The depiction of the WWI trench warfare of one the bloodiest battles in the history of mankind was seriously impressive.

i want to ride a bicycle some where and bring her home baguettes

Ok, I have it figured out. Either you’ve cloned yourself, or you only sleep 15 minutes a night. ‘Fess up – which is it?

  2.  Catizhere Says:

Ooooh, Audrey Tautou was lovely in The DaVinci Code. Even the husband asked, “Who *is* that girl? She’s gorgeous!”

  3.  Maddy Says:

Yes it’s the ‘sicky’ season around here too.
    Best wishes

  4.  Jenny Says:

Audrey is crazy hot but that pictures creeps me out. Her legs are like sticks. Fishnetted, stillettoed sticks.

  5.  Christy Says:

I’m an Audrey Hepburn fan myself. Brian and I love watching movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s. We make sure to pop in a Cary Grant or Doris Day movie at least once a week. =o)

  6.  furiousBall Says:

Chris – I dunno, but one of myselves needs to get a date with Audrey stat

Catizhere – you tell your hubby to stay away from my little French lady, I’m going to take her for a ride on my handlebars to buy some baguettes. She’ll sing to me in French and look dreamily into my eyes. And I’ll say French stuff like “oh la la” and shit.

Maddy – danka, he’ll make it

Jenny – sexy sticks, you mean

Christy – oh Audrey Hepburn invented the smoldering look didn’t she?

  7.  gigglechick Says:

hey can you please post something that you’re trying to sell? thanks

  8.  liv Says:

that playlist looks exactly as it’s billed: torture.

well, looky here, liv clicked through one of the links.

    a new day is dawning.

  9.  furiousBall Says:

gigglechick – here’s my political sign i’m selling

liv – agreed. i freakin’ love dawn

  10.  flutter Says:

    Audrey is breathtaking.

  11.  Slow Panic Says:

oh Paula Abduhl. It’s OK. It was the 80s. that was the 80 wasn’t it?

  12.  furiousBall Says:

    flutter – word

Slow Panic – yeah i know, but i am still obligated to give my best friend a hard time as much as possible

  13.  On a Limb with Claudia Says:

I like that you consistently mock your friends for the same behavior. I think that shows real fortitude on your part – a real stick-to-itness.

Did he buy the latest album??

  14.  furiousBall Says:

On a Limb with Claudia – I don’t think he did, but now I know what he’s getting for his birthday

  15.  mamatulip Says:

Ah, so THAT’S why Paula and Emilio are on your brain today.

  16.  corky Says:

Good friends who give you ammunition like a Paula Abdul CD are hard to come by. Better hold on to that one!

  17.  Maggie Says:

premature evaluation? LMAO. I think you’re standards for critiques and reviews are deplorably high. Educated guessing has been a media tradition since time immemorial. How do you think it is possible for ‘the man’ to sway public opinion and keep people in the safety of the dark without such methods?

  18.  furiousBall Says:

mamatulip – you mean as opposed to days when Paul and Emilio aren’t on my mind?

    corky – precisely

Maggie – by paying off people like payola, i’m just saying i want some money

  19.  Pendullum Says:

THe Battle of the Sommes always sends tingles down my spine in how many men were lost…
We, Canadians lost so very many…
I am thinking of this post and wondering if I could be so bold as to recommend a wonderful film…
It’s called Life and Nothing But.(1989?) It’s french… I think the true title is Vie et rien D’autre…
    A great film to watch… Phillip Noiret…
It took the french so long to make a film after the First World War… It was the first effort to try to put into perspective all that the French had lost..

  20.  Claudia Says:

SO glad Barbie is now rocking YOUR house. ;) When we’re done with the Bratz phase (shoot me now), they’re headed your way next. As for Paula, she’s forever our girl, what can I say??! Speaking of Jodi, did you see the Brave One? Thoughts? (Reserving mine until you DO see it or comment first!)

  21.  SQT Says:

Well, it’s no surprise Barney is on the torture list is it?

  22.  Jennifer Says:

Hey, I used to listen to Paula Abdul on my Walkman when I went, uh, walking. It was peppy stuff. I think I think I lost about 8 pounds to that cassette. Which was sometime in 1990. Exercise works? Huh.

As for Audrey Tautou, she’s beautiful. Girl crush beautiful. But I don’t envision her sitting on the handlebars while I pedal. (Reference above paragraph.) I would eat baguettes with her, though. I’m fairly indiscriminate that way.

  23.  Jennifer Says:

    I think I think I’m redundant, too.

  24.  randommoments Says:

Hi! Thanks for popping by my blog. :)

I adore Audrey Tautou as well. Have you seen her in the foreign films Amelie and Happenstance? She is absolutely precious in those.

  25.  Cynnie Says:

    yup she’s adorable ..

she reminds me of Lizbeth Scott..
    just more french..
    oh ,and less dyke-y.
    but similar !

  26.  furiousBall Says:

Pendullum – thanks for that film recommendation, adding it to my list!

Claudia – NO Bratz! I have not yet seen that film, i’ll add that to my list too

SQT – it would most likely be at the top of my list, right after Leo Sayer

Jennifer – I’m going to start listening to Paula Abdul and eat cookie dough just to prove you wrong

Jennifer – I’m going to start listening to Paula Abdul and eat cookie dough just to prove you wrong… woo, this redundancy is catching…

randommoments – i haven’t seen Happenstance, I shall add that!

Cynnie – Cookie Monster reminds me of Hal Linden too, but Hal has less blue fur and his eyes are less googely… well not that much less

  27.  Franki Says:

Amelie is one of my all time favorites.

And holy crap to that Scientologist link! Germans are scary motherfuckers.

  28.  furiousBall Says:

Franki – makes you wonder about German Scientologists… isn’t it frightening what people will do when their need to belong usurps their reason?

  29.  Megan Says:

Amelie-great. Ban Bratz. Paula Abdul has always and will always suck. I need to know where you got those animated batman movies from. Like yesterday.

Megan’s last blog post..autumn leaves are falling
