cranky book review

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Like most web developers, I have a large collection of books various programming languages, frameworks, databases, etc. Well one area I wanted to read about was Joomla!, the popular CMS tool used by lots and lots of folks. I’m developing my own CMS tool (and yes, that is Abbe in the background picture), ergo – know thy enemy. So I borrowed my buddy Bill’s copy of Professional Joomla! Well, I don’t know if it’s an inside joke, but do Wrox releases try to make their authors look like escaped mental patients/the local neighborhood huffer/guy driving the primered out rapist van with no windows?

Now the real problem with Professional Joomla! …Here’s me pinching the one useful chapter on creating a custom template in the book…

Yeah, that’s it. The remainder of the book the author discusses design patterns, SEO strategy (most of which has nothing to actually do with Joomla!), other already developed extensions for Joomla! … Wait, why the hell does Joomla have an exclamation point? Fuck you guys, from now on, you’re Joomla.

crazygonuts

Friday, August 21st, 2009

I’m crazygonuts busy. I’m living the life of a caffeinated nerd, but it’s all good. Need to finish up a Joomla template, finish designs on two new projects,  get started on the Hope For Humanity PHP/JS/CSS  coding for the Malawi site, and teach a guitar lesson tonight.

awake

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Again with the busy… I popped awake at 5:15am this morning for no damn good reason. Well, money woke me up. I’m very stressed about a client that has not paid me, a ceiling that was supposed to have been fixed last week, a dog that seems hell bent on destroying my house, the excruciating back pain that I am still feeling from a fall a week ago, lending my truck to someone for the weekend, and two large containers in my driveway that have to be unpacked by this Friday (see earlier reference to back pain).

Right now, I just want to stay home and work. I don’t want to go do this presentation this morning. A presentation, mind you that I am not even sure who is paying for my time (and yes, there is a direct relation to this client and the non-paying one I mentioned earlier). I miss my daughter so damn much. She doesn’t want to be away from her mother, I want to respect that, and I am stuck just not knowing what to do.

All this said, these things will all work themselves out. The real truth is I need to not worry so much.

jump!

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

So I haven’t been commenting on blogs the past week for the most part. I’ve been busy (which is a good, good thing). The bad news is that I haven’t been able to do much fun stuff with the exception of making myself stop working late yesterday afternoon to go swimming at my mother’s with Abbe, the kids, and Holly and her son, Caden. In the process though, I’ve launched a new game arcade (FlashGameFever.com – still under construction a lil’ bit) with Sage, designed a WordPress blog template for Climate Skateboards, worked on several projects with Porn Site Terry, completing a rather tricky Joomla template implementation, and continued work with Dixon Hill on theFamilyRegistry.com. Here’s some pics from yesterday… check out Viv jumping off the diving board for the first time!

Much to do

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

I’ve got lots of work to do right now (a good thing). One client is having trouble getting me the correct permissions to complete a Joomla template customization and that is frustrating for a guy like me that just wants to steamroll easy assignments like this. I am really happy with the new facelift I put on the Sore Thumbs Store (now with a Top 10 iPhone Games area – woo!). I used Magpie to consume an RSS feed from iTunes and violá, I’m carrying iPhone apps. One thing I’m really looking forward to is working on a completely new design for Lowgrove Farm (big ups to Liv for hooking me up).
